Opening New Territory:
Realizing Our Capacity for Sustained Development
“When Don Riso and I were looking for someone to collaborate with in bringing our Enneagram work into the coaching world, we wanted to find an organization that reflected our own values: presence, compassion, open-mindedness, and precision. We found all these qualities in the work of James Flaherty and the New Ventures West school … If you are looking for a way to bring the kind of insights we explore in the Enneagram work powerfully into the world of coaching, you need look no further.” —Russ Hudson
Co-author of The Wisdom of the Enneagram
The Enneagram Institute and New Ventures West are delighted to present our collaborative, in-person training together for the sixth time in six years. Originally presented at The Barn in New York in 2010, this class has rapidly gained popularity, with coaches now traveling from around the world to study the powerful combination of The Enneagram and Integral Coaching.
This hands-on, in-depth program is a creative synthesis of our two approaches that is aimed at breaking through the most challenging aspects of coaching as well as sustaining our personal development. This training goes far beyond providing tips about each Enneagram type; instead, we will be illuminating points of either potential breakdown or breakthrough in both the client and the coach.
Building from a foundation in presence, mindfulness, and accurate self-observation, we will explore the fundamental hidden obstacles in both coach and client that tend to produce the make-or-break moments in the coaching process. In such moments, the work opens up to new understandings and actions, or produces our characteristic defenses and avoidances. We will learn about our own automatic patterns that skew our coaching away from our most powerful engagement with clients, as well as how to work with the various reactions and habitual responses of our clients. In short, the intention of this course is to help our clients and ourselves move to higher levels of development and consequently greater competence, insightfulness, and maturity.
This event will be experiential, with extensive group work, dyadic inquiries, demonstrations of technique, and hands-on coaching as well as a presentation of new topics and materials for both coaches and Enneagram practitioners. The program includes periods for group discussion, questions and answers, and debriefing of our own processes. The teaching will take in and build on the comments and questions of participants.
This course is led by James Flaherty, founder of the Integral Coaching® methodology, and Russ Hudson, co-founder of the Enneagram Institute. This rigorous training is the culmination of their many years of joint study on the intersection of their two fields. The class itself is attended by a robust cohort of students; however, group size is limited to allow for intimacy and individual attention.
Continuing Coaching Education Credits: Enrolled coaches who are also certified through the International Coach Federation will receive 38 hours of ICF CCEUs (all in ICF Core Competencies). They may also earn 2 hours of Self-Study CCEUs by reading the required texts for the class.
Recertification: This course provides one year’s recertification for Integral Coaches®.
Prerequisites: We strongly recommend that all participants read The Wisdom of the Enneagram (Don Riso and Russ Hudson) and Coaching: Evoking Excellence in Others (James Flaherty) as minimum preparation before attending the training. We also recommend that attendees have previous training with either The Enneagram Institute (Part One Training) or New Ventures West (Coaching to Excellence or equivalent). If you have not taken either of these programs but have had significant previous coach or Enneagram training with another organization, you are still welcome to attend. However, we will assume that participants are familiar with the methodologies of The Enneagram Institute and New Ventures West, and we will not take time to review these methodologies nor to reconcile them with other approaches.
